Hidden Performance Max mistake exposed. Absolutely. I’m going to help you figure out if you are also making the mistake and how to fix it. I’m Todd Nevins, I am the founder of CLICKPlacement and we are a Google partner. If you’re already running Performance Max campaigns, you already know that you have limited ability to control where the ads show through your campaign.

They could show on the search network, the shopping network, display, Gmail, YouTube and also the partner those networks outside of the Google properties and also mobile apps. We had a company come to us recently and they were running all of their marketing in house running a Performance Max campaign.

And over the last six months they had had a return on ad spend of 500%. Not bad spend a dollar, make $5. Everything was running very well. And then overnight a week ago, their clicks quadrupled and their conversions and their sales dropped to almost zero.

And they were bur a day over the last seven days and they came to us asking can you find the problem and can you fix the problem and can you do it immediately? So that’s exactly what we did. We dove in as they were explaining the problem.

I already knew what it was and it was a poor placement problem. And unfortunately Google introduces new partners into their network and new apps flood into the Performance Max campaigns overnight.

Literally overnight. And we don’t know about it and it just happens. And we have to catch the poor performance as it happens in real time and make adjustments. We have to figure out where our ads are showing to what placements and how to block those out.

And this is exactly how to do it. You log into your Google Ads account, make sure you are in the Performance Max campaign. You go to Insights and Reports Report editor and then you scroll down to the section that is titled when and where ads showed Performance Max campaigns and the placements.

And this is where you find out where your ads have been shown. So I’ve got a 30 day range on this particular PMAX campaign and the Google owned and operated. These are the ones that I mentioned earlier. Display, Gmail Shopping. These are Google’s properties.

17,000 impressions over the last 30 days, but 29,451 impressions total. This is the problem. So you can scroll through and see that all of these mobile apps received impressions.

This particular search or this particular report does not give you clicks or cost. It only gives you impressions. But you know, impressions then follow clicks, follow impressions. So what you do is download the report. For the sake of making this video short, I’m going to leave in the description how you take this downloaded report and block all of these placements out of this Performance Max campaign in your account and all PMAX campaigns.

It’s done at the account level. Follow the steps in the video below. I hope this video helped you. This is a super common mistake. It happens before you know it. You’ve got to catch it quick or you will burn through your budget. I hope it helped you.
